Monday, February 3rd: Honoring Sant Blai

The festival's final day focuses on religious observance. At 8:30 AM, a mass will be held in honor of Sant Blai at the Church of Santa Catalina Mártir. Following the service, there will be a blessing of the 'dames', underscoring the deep-rooted spiritual significance of the celebration.

The Significance of 'La Dama' in Teulada Moraira

Central to the Sant Blai festivities is 'La Dama', a distinctive sweet that holds a special place in the hearts of Teulada Moraira residents. This delicacy, unique to the region, is traditionally shaped like a woman, symbolizing reverence for mothers and nature. Crafted from simple ingredients such as flour, fresh yeast, oil, sugar, cinnamon, eggs, and milk, the recipe has been lovingly passed down through generations.

Historically, on this day, elders of the family present the 'Dama de Sant Blai' to their grandchildren after it has been blessed during the morning mass. This cherished practice not only strengthens familial bonds but also ensures the perpetuation of this unique tradition within the community.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

In a significant move to honor and protect this tradition, the Teulada Town Council has initiated proceedings to have the 'Dama de Sant Blai' declared as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition aims to officially acknowledge the cultural and traditional importance of the 'Dama' in the Sant Blai festivities, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Mayor Raúl Llobell expressed his satisfaction with this initiative, stating, "Today is a very special day for all the residents of Teulada Moraira. With this declaration, we not only preserve a centuries-old tradition but also pay homage to our roots and cultural identity. The Damas de Sant Blai are a symbol of our town, and now their value is officially recognized."

Councilor of Culture, Rosana Caselles, emphasized the festival's significance, noting, "The Sant Blai festival is much more than an annual celebration; it is a moment of unity and continuity of our customs. The Dama, with its unique form and traditional recipe, not only represents a typical sweet but also the transmission of knowledge and values from generation to generation."
